Efficacy of Baycox in Chickens

Baycox (Toltrazuril) is a symmetrical triazinetrione derivative. Therapeutic intervention consists of a two-day treatment course at 7 mg/kg bw daily. The daily dose can be flexibly administered in drinking water during a period of 8 to 24 hours per day.

The main characteristics of Baycox are the following:

Highly efficacious coccidiocidal against all intracellular stages (shizogony and gametogony) off all important Eimeria species in all avian species. Baycox causes the following cidal changes in the organelles of the parasite at multiple levels.

  • cytoplasma vacuolization and enlarged endoplasmatic reticulum,
  • swollen mitochondria (respiratory metabolism),
  • interference with nuclear division,
  • damage ("bursting") of type II wall-forming bodies in macrogamonts.

The Baycox programmes are:

  • Therapy:
It is used in cases of disease outbreaks. To allow successful treatment, the exact dosage of 7 mg/kg bw during 2 consecutive days (0.28 ml per kg bw) must be carefully administered according to live weight and water consumption.

  • Damage anticipation:
    Improvements to existing prevention programmes.

    • Metaphylactic administration, e.g., between shuttle of ingredients "bridge concept"
    • Cross-over therapy in broilers to reduce damage associated with varying degrees of unpredictable coccidiosis caused by ionophore-tolerant Eimeria strains.
    • At 10 to 12 days following live vaccine administration

  • Stand-alone:
Therapy of early infections with enhancement of natural immunity
