Cost-Benefit Analysis of Coccidiosis Treatment

The results of different trials conducted across various countries have shown that the treatment of infected piglets with Baycox® 5% results in favourable weight gains as compared to untreated infected animals.

Driesen et al performed a cost benefit analysis in naturally infected pigs ( one group was kept untreated and other was treated with Baycox® 5%). At the weaning age , they reported a weight gain  difference of 20.3 grams per day  in Baycox® treated group and a reduction of 85% in number of antibiotic treatment needed to control concomitant bacterial infections.

Under the particular conditions of this trial the cost benefit per treated piglet was € 1.00.

The above mentioned data coincides very well with the information coming from the field. The practitioners  that have used Baycox 5% mention the following benefits of using it.

  1. Decrease in the incidence of clinical diarrhoea
  2. Better weight gain in treated piglets at weaning age.
  3. Reduction in the use of antibiotics to control concomitant bacterial problems in the piglets.
  4. Homogenous batches at the time of weaning.
  5. Both the farmers and veterinarians are satisfied to find a solution to early diarrhoea problem in piglets.

The significance of these benefits is always linked to differences in infection pressure, hygiene standards and previous treatment programs.
