Efficacy against Coccidiosis Diarrhoea in Piglets

The efficacy of a single oral treatment with Baycox against neonatal diarrhoea caused by coccidiosis in piglets has been widely demonstrated in the experimental and field trials of several studies in various countries and under differing management and hygiene conditions.

The table below shows the results of some important efficacy trials.

Country

No. of animals
treated

Dose and day
of treatment
Efficacy (result of treatment compared with untreated control)
Denmark 25 litters / group 0-20 mg/kg bw
4th day of life
Reduced oocyst excretion and distinct reduction of diarrhoea, better weight development
France 25 litters / group
(395 piglets in total)
0-20 mg/kg bw
3rd - 5th day of life
Reduced oocyst excretion and better weight gain
Germany 6 litters / group 0-20 mg/kg bw
2nd - 4th day of life
Reduced oocyst excretion
Sweden 29 litters / group 0-20 mg/kg bw
4th day of life
Reduced duration of diarrhoea; better weight development
Australia ~ 1050 litters / group 0-20 mg/kg bw
3rd - 6th day of life
Reduced oocyst excretion, severity of diarrhoea, number of antibiotic treatments required; better weight development

Treated piglets showed improvements regarding their clinical picture (diarrhoea was the most frequently noted criterion) and oocyst shedding. Also reported was a reduction in the number of antibiotic treatments required, more uniform herds at weaning age, and better weight gain in treated animals compared with untreated animals.
