Protozoic Parasites
Coccidia are a group of intracellular protozoan parasites belonging to Class Coccidia . The class Coccidia contains two families of veterinary importance, viz. Family Eimeriidae and Sarcocystiidae.
The genera Eimeria and Isospora belong to family Eimeriidae.
Although 13 different species of Eimeria and 3 species of Isospora have been reported from pigs but their importance is not clear. Only Isospora suis is considered to cause severe enteritis in piglets. However , Eimeria debliecki is another species of coccidia incriminated to cause pathology in pigs.
